Introduction

English, as a global lingua franca and the language of the internet, is a valuable skill to have in the professional world. As a professional geoscientist, knowledge of technical English specific to the geosciences is an asset that will open doors to career opportunities and increase the reach of your professional network.

The internet has created a permanently connected and active global network; individuals and teams from around the world are able to communicate and work together, regardless of their respective geolocations. Work in the geosciences is often collaborative and for international teams, English is often the language of communication.

This course is for professionals working in the geosciences and advanced bachelor (BSc) or postgraduate (MSc and PhD) students who have knowledge of the English language. It is for individuals who would like to develop their technical geoscience English language skills to prepare for or enhance their performance in the workplace.

The course is presented through videos and interactive, high-quality multimedia content made available via the virtual platform, combined with practical exercises. There will be live class webinars and individual tutorials delivered by videoconference.

Objectives

The course provides the opportunity to:

  • Review of the fundamental concepts of the English language at B2 level.
  • Practice engaging with scientific and technical geoscience texts and audio transcripts to gain a good level of understanding in a range of contexts.
  • Learn new, technical terminologies and vocabulary that will develop your repertoire when engaging professionally with an English-speaking audience. This covers the principal geoscience subject areas (see the contents tab for details).
  • Create and deliver short technical presentations in English.
  • Develop written English language skills to write a CV and cover letter, and verbal English language skills for job interviews and workplace communication.
