This course includes an overview of mine waste management, what tailings are, geotechnical and geochemical characteristics of tailings, various tailings storage facility types, and tailings disposal technologies.<\/p>\n
The course continues with basis of design for various Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs), design guidelines based on CDA, ANCOLD and GISTM, the selection of design parameters for tailings dam slope stability and seepage analyses, TSF water management and closure plans.<\/p>\n
The course will provide tailings dam construction and operation monitoring, including construction materials and instrumentation. The course concludes by providing investigation of tailings dam failure case studies and closure case studies.<\/p>\n
Tailings engineering is not a major discipline in universities, and it is an interdisciplinary knowledge covers civil, environmental, mining, and mechanical engineering. The objective of this course is to familiarize engineering students and consultants with different aspects of mine waste and tailings management including step by step TSF design, stability issues, environmental concerns, water management, construction and operation and closure planning. The students are expected to be prepared for tailings engineering careers.<\/p>\n
